The ice door at the back here is easy to reach without the spider ball, and lets you access the far side of Phendrana without the tedious trip through the research labs.
Start by jumping on any piece of debris in the room that gives decent height when standing on it. Space jump from there to either of the two poles closest to the door, then do another to reach the door. Morph into a ball and roll through.
You can then enter Frozen Pike before fighting Thardus, yet also without ever visiting the research labs.
