The lowest percentage currently deemed possible to
complete the game with is 23%. It started with the obvious 29% game,
getting no energy tanks or expansions of any kind and no wavebuster,
ice spreader or flamethrower. Soon after this it was found that the
thermal visor wasn't needed, so 28% become the lowest. A few weeks
later the grapple beam was also eliminated and made for 27%.
A month or so after, the only obstacle preventing the skipping of
the charge beam and super missile was finally cleared. In the same
day, we also found out how to get through the crashed frigate
without the gravity suit, making for a 3% drop in one day.
Now here we are again after the discovery of the 24% game. The
spider ball was widely agreed upon as the next realistic item to be
skipped, since all but two of the problematic rooms were solved
months ago. It took a while, but now the spider ball has also joined
the family of unnecessary items, resulting in 23%.
Of course, we aren't big fans of misinformation, so TreborSelbon
agreed to a quick 23% game on normal before we considered it
official. As unreal as it seems, it's now possible to keep the first
Tallon Overworld theme for the entire game, never fight Thardus, and
never pick up the spider ball.
Note that 23% is not official in PAL yet, although 24% has been
for a long time.
The below is a list of the items currently still required and
why.
Missile Launcher: The door to the Artifact Temple is
missile locked, among others. This would only have a chance if a way
to get a missile expansion before the launcher was found, and it for
some reason didn't increase the % at all.
Morph Ball: It's used everywhere. There is one thing we're
curious about though, and that's whether or not getting the morph
ball bomb before the morph ball would let you use it. Aside from
that being unlikely, it's hard to tell since there's a morph ball
tunnel right before Burn Dome. For what it's worth though, the morph
ball isn't needed for the tunnel in Gathering Hall.
Morph Ball Bomb: Another item that is just used
everywhere. There's no way to tell if getting the boost ball or
power bomb first would allow you to use these.
Varia Suit: Would only have a chance if this item actually
doesn't let you survive the heat in Magmoor, but rather an early
game event triggers Magmoor to become hot and a way was found to
keep it from becoming hot. Sounds like wishful thinking.
Boost Ball: Geothermal Core and Life Grove keep this item
necessary. The method to get through Hydro Access Tunnel in the
frigate without the gravity suit also depends on boost, but other
than those three rooms it's not required. This seems like one of the
more likely items to be next.
Space Jump Boots: Space jump is another suspicious one. A
lot of progress has been made toward a no space jump game, but a
long list of obstacles also remain. That's not even taking into
account that a lot more work would have to be done to actually lower
the % by skipping it completely instead of relying on other now
unnecessary items to get through certain places.
Wave Beam: Is required to get the ice beam and defeat
Metroid Prime's wave form in Subchamber 1, Subchamber 2 and
Subchamber 3.
Ice Beam: Is required to get the plasma beam and defeat
Metroid Prime's ice form in Subchamber 2 and Subchamber 3.
Plasma Beam: Is required to get some artifacts and defeat
Metroid Prime's plasma form in Subchamber 3.
Power Bomb: This is needed to get several artifacts.
X-ray Visor: No one has found a way to damage Omega Pirate
without this, although it would instantly mean 22% if someone did
find a way.
Phazon Suit: The phazon suit doesn't add % so it doesn't
matter.
