FIGHT RIDLEY BEFORE OMEGA PIRATE

(Thanks: Amasawa)

The artifact of Newborn, located in the Phazon Mining Tunnel, can be obtained without the phazon suit, provided Samus has enough energy. This has been tested and confirmed, by Amasawa, on Normal mode with 13 energy tank pickups, the maximum number possible to obtain before defeating the Omega Pirate, but it may be possible with fewer e-tanks and/or on Hard mode. Here's why and how it works:

If all the boulders blocking the path to the artifact are destroyed first, and then Samus finds a way to recharge her energy, she will have plenty of time to roll in, snag the artifact, and escape before her energy drops to zero.

In most cases, the game reloads room data if Samus moves into another room that's not adjacent to the one she's in. This holds true with the Phazon mining tunnel as well -- if Samus goes any farther than Fungal Hall A or Fungal Hall B, on either side of the Phazon Mining Tunnel, the room reloads, the rocks reset, and any work to clear them out of the way is lost.

Since there's no energy source in the Phazon Mining Tunnel, the only recourse is to go to one of the Fungal Halls and start blasting Metroids, hoping they'll drop energy (especially the Ultra flavor). When finished in one Fungal Hall, you can go to the other Fungal Hall and destroy Metroids to collect more energy there. Since the Phazon mining tunnel sits in between the two rooms, its room data remains constant while the data for the Fungal Halls keeps reloading as Samus moves back and forth between them, providing an endless (although tedious to collect) source of energy.

You can use this trick to refill energy as often as you want, so that you can make multiple trips into the Phazon Mining Tunnel to gradually clear all the rocks out of the way. While leapfrogging back and forth between rooms, however, be careful that a door never opens and shuts before Samus slips through it. If this happens, the room data for the Phazon Mining Tunnel may reload anyway and undo your progress.

Once you've acquired the artifact of Newborn, backtrack through the Phazon Mines and collect the other 11 artifacts as usual. This will allow you to face Ridley at the Impact Crater before facing the Omega Pirate -- and will even allow you to reach the final boss battle if you so choose, although you won't be able to complete the game without defeating the Omega Pirate to gain a necessary powerup.
