If you enter this elevator without having the Echo Visor, do not shoot the area in the room where you would normally see the drone via the visor or the game will crash and reset. You would normally not be able to enter this room without having used the Echo Visor to open the door to the portal in Main Research, but having the screw attack early allows you to.
